The Cobourg Police Service is reminding parents, guardians and youth about the dangers of misusing over-the-counter medications following two drug poisoning incidents involving young people last week.
Police say in both cases, youth were taken to hospital for medical treatment after reportedly ingesting an over-the-counter medication believed to be Benadryl.
The circumstances surrounding the incidents remain under investigation, but police say the cases highlight the serious health risks associated with taking medications outside of their intended use.
The warning comes amid ongoing concerns across Canada about the social media “Benadryl challenge,” which encourages participants to consume excessive amounts of diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in some allergy medications.
Police say even medications available without a prescription can cause serious health complications when taken in amounts above the recommended dosage.
The Cobourg Police Service is encouraging families to have conversations with children and teens about online trends and the risks associated with misusing both prescription and over-the-counter medications.
Police recommend storing medications securely, monitoring quantities kept at home and seeking immediate medical attention if an overdose or adverse reaction is suspected.
Anyone experiencing a medical emergency is asked to call 9-1-1. For information or assistance related to poisoning incidents, contact the Ontario Poison Centre at 1-800-268-9017.
