The Northumberland OPP and Correctional Service Canada (CSC) are investigating after a staff member was assaulted at Warkworth Institution last week.
Police say they were notified shortly after 5 p.m. on July 10 that an inmate had allegedly assaulted a staff member inside the medium-security federal correctional facility.
The injured employee was transported to a local hospital, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Correctional Service Canada confirmed the inmate involved has been identified and said the incident remains under investigation by both the institution and the Northumberland OPP.
In a statement, CSC said the safety and security of correctional institutions, staff, inmates and the public remains its highest operational priority. The agency also indicated it will conduct an internal review of the circumstances surrounding the incident and implement any measures considered necessary to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
The OPP noted it works closely with Correctional Service Canada to maintain the safety and security of federal correctional institutions and surrounding communities. That partnership includes investigating incidents, preventing the introduction of contraband and enforcing applicable laws.
No additional details about the circumstances of the assault or potential charges have been released.
Anyone with information about suspected criminal activity is encouraged to contact the Northumberland OPP or Crime Stoppers.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police say further updates will be provided as they become available.
