A 42-year-old driver is facing a series of charges after allegedly fleeing police before being involved in a collision on Highway 401 in Cramahe Township.
Northumberland OPP say they were first alerted around 6:30 p.m. on July 12 by a neighbouring police service about a light blue passenger vehicle that had failed to stop for police and was travelling eastbound from Port Hope.
Shortly afterward, officers received several complaints from motorists reporting the vehicle was being driven dangerously along Highway 401.
At approximately 6:40 p.m., police and Emergency Medical Services responded to a two-vehicle collision on the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 in Cramahe Township.
According to police, both occupants of one of the vehicles fled the scene on foot into a nearby wooded area. The OPP Emergency Response Team was called in to assist, and both individuals were later located. The driver was arrested and taken to an OPP detachment for further testing.
Police say injuries resulting from the collision were non-life-threatening.
The accused has been charged with flight from a peace officer, dangerous operation, impaired operation, operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit, failing to comply with a probation order, failing to remain at the scene of a collision, and driving while under suspension.
The accused is scheduled to appear in Cobourg court in August. Police also imposed a 90-day administrative driver’s licence suspension and seven-day vehicle impoundment.
Investigators are asking anyone with dashcam or other video footage of the incident who has not yet spoken with police to contact the Northumberland OPP.
