The Town of Cobourg is extending access to Victoria Hall this evening as residents cope with a combination of extreme heat and deteriorating air quality caused by wildfire smoke drifting into southern Ontario.
Town officials say the Victoria Hall lobby, located at 55 King Street West, will remain open until 11 p.m. Wednesday to provide a safe indoor space for anyone seeking temporary relief from the heat and smoke. The building’s ventilation system uses HEPA filtration and air quality inside the facility is continuously monitored.
Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued an Orange Air Quality Warning for Cobourg, Colborne and western Northumberland County, while the region also remains under a Yellow Heat Warning. The Air Quality Health Index is expected to range from moderate risk to very high risk (10+) before conditions improve. Current forecasts indicate the worst of the smoke should dissipate around midnight.
Additional municipal cooling centres remain available, including the Cobourg Community Centre, open daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., and the Cobourg Public Library during regular operating hours.
Lakelands Public Health says residents should prioritize staying cool when both heat and smoke warnings are in effect. Those at greatest risk include seniors, young children, pregnant individuals, people with heart or lung conditions, outdoor workers and those experiencing homelessness.
Health officials recommend keeping windows and doors closed, limiting strenuous outdoor activity, staying well hydrated and considering a properly fitted N95 respirator if time outdoors is unavoidable.
In neighbouring Port Hope, the Municipality is also advising residents about reduced air quality and has implemented a municipal-wide burn ban because of the combination of dry conditions and wildfire smoke. The ban remains in effect until further notice.
