The Ontario Provincial Police is preparing for increased traffic enforcement as Operation Safe Driver Week gets underway July 12.
Running through July 18, the annual campaign combines education, awareness and targeted enforcement to reduce dangerous driving behaviours involving both commercial and passenger vehicles.
The initiative, led by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, focuses on behaviours that contribute to serious collisions, including speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, following too closely and improper lane changes. Officers will also monitor commercial vehicle safety requirements, including inspections, hours of service, cargo securement and the transportation of dangerous goods.
The OPP says commercial motor vehicles were involved in 8,826 collisions investigated within OPP jurisdictions in 2025. Those crashes included 77 fatal collisions that claimed the lives of 95 people.
Police say the campaign serves as a reminder that safe driving decisions can prevent collisions and save lives, regardless of whether motorists are operating a commercial vehicle or a passenger vehicle.
Operation Safe Driver Week is held annually across North America to encourage safer driving habits and improve road safety through a combination of enforcement and public education. Drivers are reminded to obey traffic laws, stay alert and make safety a priority every time they get behind the wheel.
