Northumberland OPP are reporting a busy stretch of policing activity across the county, with investigations resulting in impaired driving, shoplifting and Highway Traffic Act charges, while officers also responded to several fires and other public safety incidents.
Among the more serious cases, police say a traffic complaint on Highway 401 in Hamilton Township on June 19 led officers to a pickup truck parked at a commercial property in Port Hope. Investigators allege the Ottawa driver was impaired, registering more than three times the legal blood alcohol limit. Police also allege the individual was prohibited from driving. The vehicle was impounded for 45 days and the accused is scheduled to appear in Cobourg court in July.
Police also laid charges following a June 13 motorcycle crash at County Road 18 and Roseneath Landing Road in Alnwick/Haldimand. The rider suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and investigators allege the individual was prohibited from driving and committed several Highway Traffic Act offences.
Two separate shoplifting investigations also resulted in arrests this week. One involved merchandise valued at about $530 stolen from a business in Alnwick/Haldimand in February, while the other stemmed from a theft at a business on Front Street North in Campbellford.
Elsewhere, officers responded to a structure fire in Brighton on June 17 and a tractor-trailer fire on Highway 401 in Alnwick/Haldimand on June 23 after hay bales caught fire, forcing lane reductions and highway closures that caused significant traffic delays. No injuries were reported in either incident.
Police also responded to a well-being check in Cramahe that resulted in a public intoxication charge.
Northumberland OPP encourage anyone with information about suspected unlawful activity to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
