The Municipality of Port Hope has adopted a new Municipal Wildland Fire Management Plan aimed at improving community preparedness as the risk of wildland fires continues to grow across Ontario.
Developed by Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services with funding support from Hydro One’s Energizing Life Community Fund, the plan was created in partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority and local emergency service partners.
Municipal officials say climate change, prolonged drought, more frequent extreme weather and continued development in forested and rural areas are increasing the potential for wildland and wildland-urban interface fires.
Mayor Olena Hankivsky says the plan strengthens the municipality’s ability to respond to changing conditions while helping build a more resilient community.
The plan includes enhanced wildfire risk mapping, response planning, vegetation management strategies and recommendations for reducing combustible fuels in higher-risk areas. It also incorporates wildfire considerations into future land use and infrastructure planning.
A key component is the introduction of the FireSmart Canada program in Port Hope. The initiative will provide homeowners with practical information on reducing wildfire risks around their properties while encouraging community-wide participation in wildfire prevention. The municipality will also explore establishing a FireSmart Community Committee to support ongoing public education and outreach.
Officials say the plan will improve public safety, strengthen emergency preparedness, enhance firefighter safety and position Port Hope to better respond to future wildfire threats while aligning with evolving provincial guidance on wildfire prevention and climate adaptation.
The complete Municipal Wildland Fire Management Plan is available on the Municipality of Port Hope’s website.
