The VOS Theatre celebrated local talent and looked ahead to its next major production during its annual general meeting held June 15 at the organization’s new home on Burwash Road in Baltimore.
The community theatre group presented its annual arts scholarships to two local students. Cobourg resident Mark Nugent received the Ruth Harcourt Memorial Scholarship, while Port Hope resident Brodick Ewing was awarded the Garth Watson Memorial Scholarship. Each scholarship provides $1,000 to support post-secondary studies while recognizing contributions to the arts community.
Nugent recently graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary School and has been active in choir and theatre productions, most recently appearing as Sam Carmichael in Mamma Mia. Ewing graduated from Cobourg Collegiate Institute and has contributed extensively behind the scenes in school productions through set construction, lighting and audio-visual work. He also performs as a bagpiper and plans to attend Trent University this fall.
The annual meeting also highlighted a successful season for VOS Theatre. The company’s productions of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella and Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express drew strong audiences, with Murder on the Orient Express earning multiple honours from the Eastern Ontario Drama League, including awards for set design, visual production and period accuracy.
Looking ahead, VOS announced the cast of Disney’s Frozen, which will run November 19 to 28 at Victoria Hall’s Concert Hall in Cobourg. Monique Soleil will portray Princess Anna, while Laura Murphy has been cast as Queen Elsa.
Tickets for the production are now available through VOS Theatre and the Victoria Hall box office.
