Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services is investigating after a large overnight fire at the former File Factory property on Cavan Street.
Municipal officials say the blaze involved the remaining section of the former industrial building at 121 Cavan Street. As a result, Cavan Street has been closed between Highland Drive and Barrett Street and is expected to remain closed for several days while the investigation continues.
Residents are being asked to avoid the area.
The latest fire comes nearly two years after a major blaze tore through the historic File Factory complex in July 2024. That fire burned for days, drew assistance from numerous surrounding fire departments and ultimately led to the demolition of much of the structure.
In the months that followed, the site remained fenced off while debris removal, environmental assessments and cleanup work continued. Most recently, contractors had begun clearing remaining debris from the property.
Municipal officials have not yet released information regarding the extent of the damage caused by the latest fire, and the cause remains under investigation.
The former File Factory has long been one of Port Hope’s most recognizable industrial landmarks, making the site a point of interest for residents since the original fire.
Officials say updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
