The sights, sounds and traditions of Scotland will once again take centre stage in Port Hope this weekend as the 62nd Northumberland Scottish Festival and Highland Games returns to the Port Hope Agricultural Park.
The two-day celebration begins Friday, June 19, and continues Saturday, June 20, bringing together competitors, musicians, vendors and visitors from across Ontario, Canada and the United States.
Festivities begin Friday evening with a free ceilidh featuring The Fiddleheads from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., along with the popular Stones of Strength competition beginning at 6 p.m.
Saturday’s activities start at 8 a.m. with Highland dance competitions, pipe and drum competitions, heavy events, clan tents, merchants and family-friendly activities. The Wee Highlanders area will offer face painting, games and other activities for younger visitors.
Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 11:45 a.m., followed by a full afternoon of competitions. The closing ceremonies and Parade of Bands take place at 5 p.m., before another free evening ceilidh featuring Madman’s Window from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
One of the major draws each year is the Highland dance competition, which attracts dancers from across Canada and the United States. Visitors will also have opportunities to meet representatives from Scottish clans, browse Celtic vendors and enjoy Scottish and Canadian food throughout the weekend.
The event takes place at the Port Hope Agricultural Park, 62 McCaul Street.
Admission is $25 at the gate, while children 12 and under are admitted free. Organizers also note that admission to both evening ceilidhs is free.
