The Town of Cobourg is inviting residents to join its annual Pride Month flag raising ceremony on Monday, June 8.
The event will take place at 11 a.m. outside Victoria Hall, where the Intersex-Inclusive Progress Pride Flag will be raised in recognition of Pride Month and the contributions of the 2SLGBTQ+ community.
Mayor Lucas Cleveland, members of council, representatives from PFLAG Canada’s Cobourg Chapter, town staff, and community members are expected to participate in the ceremony.
Town officials say the annual event is an opportunity to show solidarity, encourage dialogue, and reaffirm Cobourg’s commitment to inclusion and equity.
The Pride Flag will fly at Victoria Hall and Jubilee Park throughout June.
Several community events are also planned during Pride Month.
The YMCA Northumberland Rainbow Run takes place Sunday, June 7, beginning at the Cobourg Yacht Club. The family-friendly event includes a Kids Bubble Dash, as well as 2.5-kilometre and five-kilometre walk and run options along Cobourg’s waterfront and downtown area. Proceeds will support the YMCA Strong Communities Campaign and Northumberland Pride.
On June 8, the Cobourg Police Service will host a free community barbecue beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the police station on King Street West. Donations supporting the local PFLAG chapter will be accepted.
Downtown Cobourg Pride returns June 20 with a day-long celebration featuring a Pride parade, street market, food vendors, entertainment, family activities, and extended patios.
The Cobourg Public Library is also recognizing Pride Month through special displays featuring 2SLGBTQ+ books, history, memoirs, and educational resources available throughout June.
