The Northumberland Labour Council has approved a resolution opposing war, economic sanctions, and foreign intervention, while calling on the Canadian government to place greater emphasis on diplomacy, peacebuilding, and international law.
The resolution was passed during the labour council’s general membership meeting on May 27.
In the document, the council expresses concern about ongoing international conflicts and geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East. The resolution criticizes United States foreign policy, including military actions, economic sanctions, and support for Israel’s military operations in Gaza.
The labour council argues that wars, sanctions, and military interventions often place the greatest burden on ordinary people through displacement, economic hardship, and loss of life.
Among its recommendations, the resolution calls on the Government of Canada to support ceasefires in ongoing conflicts, uphold international law consistently, oppose violations of national sovereignty, and pursue negotiated solutions to international disputes.
The resolution also urges Canada to oppose unilateral sanctions and blockades that it says harm civilian populations, specifically referencing measures imposed on countries including Cuba and Venezuela.
In addition, the labour council committed to working with affiliated unions, community organizations, and peace groups to support education and advocacy efforts related to war, sanctions, and militarization.
The resolution will be circulated to affiliated unions, labour councils, the Canadian Labour Congress, and other organizations as part of an effort to encourage broader discussion and coordinated action on the issues raised.
The Northumberland Labour Council represents affiliated unions and labour organizations from across Northumberland County and regularly adopts resolutions on workplace, social, economic, and public policy issues.
