Students at St. Mary Catholic Elementary School are set to benefit from new outdoor play opportunities thanks to continued support from the Community Foundation of Campbellford/Seymour and Northumberland.
The school has received a $5,000 grant from the foundation for a second consecutive year, with this year’s funding dedicated to a project called “Enhancing Outdoor Play.” The initiative will expand access to recreational equipment that supports outdoor learning, physical education, and recess activities while encouraging active and inclusive play experiences.
The project includes the purchase of new outdoor play equipment as well as a secure storage shed to help protect materials and support the program’s long term sustainability. School staff say the improvements are expected to benefit students across all age groups by creating more opportunities for physical activity, creativity, and social interaction.
The grant builds on previous support received from the foundation. In 2025, the school used grant funding to introduce flexible seating options in all 12 classrooms, including floor seating, standing desks, exercise ball chairs, and rocking chairs. Staff reported improvements in student engagement, comfort, focus, and collaboration as a result of those enhancements.
Principal Melissa Jolicoeur said the Community Foundation’s ongoing support has helped fund projects focused on technology, accessibility, science, athletics, and student well being, creating meaningful opportunities for students while enriching the overall school experience.
The Community Foundation of Campbellford/Seymour and Northumberland awarded more than $202,000 to 30 community projects in 2026, continuing its longstanding support of local initiatives.
