Northumberland OPP say a person injured in a serious collision on Highway 401 near Port Hope has died and investigators are continuing to appeal for witnesses.
Emergency crews responded to a two vehicle collision on the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 near the service centre in the Municipality of Port Hope at approximately 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 30.
According to police, investigators believe one of the vehicles involved was parked on the shoulder when the driver exited the vehicle.
During the incident, the parked vehicle was struck by another vehicle and the motorist who had exited was also struck.
The victim was transported to a local hospital before being airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre with life threatening injuries. OPP now confirm the individual later succumbed to those injuries in hospital.
Police say no other serious injuries were reported among those involved.
The collision prompted the closure of Highway 401 eastbound at Newtonville while members of the OPP Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement team assisted with the investigation. All lanes reopened at approximately 3:30 p.m. on May 31.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Northumberland OPP are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have dashcam footage from the area around the time of the incident to contact police at 1-888-310-1122.
