A person has been airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre with life-threatening injuries following a collision on Highway 401 near Port Hope.
Members of the Ontario Provincial Police, along with paramedics and firefighters, responded to a two-vehicle collision on the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 near the service centre in the Municipality of Port Hope at about 11 a.m. Saturday.
Police say one of the vehicles involved was believed to have been parked on the shoulder when its driver exited the vehicle. During the incident, the parked vehicle was struck by another vehicle, and the motorist who had exited was also hit.
The injured individual was taken to a local hospital before being airlifted by Ornge to a Toronto trauma centre with life-threatening injuries.
No other serious injuries were reported.
The eastbound lanes of Highway 401 were closed at Newtonville while members of the OPP Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement team assisted with the investigation. The highway fully reopened at about 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
The collision remains under investigation.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have dashcam footage from the area at the time of the collision to contact the OPP. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers.
