The Ontario Junior Hockey League has announced a significant change for junior hockey in Cobourg, confirming the current Cobourg Cougars franchise will relocate to Toronto while the Haliburton County Huskies franchise moves to Cobourg and assumes the Cougars identity.
Under the arrangement announced Friday, the existing Cobourg franchise will operate as the Toronto Warriors beginning with the 2026-27 season, playing out of Scotiabank Pond in Toronto.
At the same time, the Haliburton County Huskies organization will relocate to Cobourg, taking over the historic Cobourg Cougars name, branding, and arena tenancy at the Cobourg Community Centre.
OJHL Commissioner Marty Savoy said the league determined a significant change was needed to protect the future of both organizations while keeping junior hockey in Cobourg.
“Maintaining the current structural alignment was putting the operational and financial viability of both franchises at critical risk,” Savoy said in a release. He described the move as a way to preserve hockey in a historic market while providing the outgoing franchise a fresh start in a larger centre.
The announcement comes after a challenging period for the Cougars organization. During the 2025-26 season, concerns were raised by fans regarding declining attendance, on-ice performance, organizational direction, and community engagement. Public frustration was evident during several games and community discussions throughout the season.
Station Manager Tommy West spoke with current Cougars owner Max Wang on Friday, who confirmed the relocation announcement.
The OJHL says the incoming ownership group from Haliburton brings an established operational track record and will continue OJHL hockey in Cobourg under the Cougars banner.
For local fans, the result means the Cobourg Cougars name, colours, and history will remain in the community, although the franchise itself will be operated by a different ownership group beginning next season.
