The Town of Cobourg says “threatening correspondence” received by mail this week directed at Mayor Lucas Cleveland and a member of the town’s senior leadership team has been reported to police.
In a brief release issued Friday, May 22, 2026, the town confirmed receipt of what was described as a “threatening correspondence,” but did not elaborate on the alleged threat.
Officials only said the mayor and a member of the senior leadership team received the correspondence in the mail this week – and that the matter was reported to the Cobourg Police Service.
Cleveland also issued a statement in the release.
“The safety and well-being of municipal staff, council members and the public is a standing priority of the town,” he said. “Threats and intimidation have no place in civic discourse.
“Residents are encouraged to engage constructively through council meetings, public delegations and established democratic processes,” said Cleveland.
The town said no further details about the correspondence will be released and no other details were included in Friday’s release.
