Cobourg police say a man is facing multiple charges following a disturbance in the downtown core Tuesday evening.
Police say officers responded around 7 p.m. on May 5 to reports of screaming and fighting involving several individuals near King Street West in Cobourg.
According to police, officers located one individual hiding beneath an exterior fire escape staircase behind a property in the area.
Police say officers directed the man to come out from beneath the staircase, but allege he initially refused to comply. Investigators say the man later exited and allegedly assaulted an officer before being taken into custody.
During the arrest, police say officers located a folding knife, a quantity of suspected fentanyl, a digital scale, and cash.
As a result of the investigation, a 25 year old Cobourg man has been charged with assaulting a peace officer, obstructing police, carrying a concealed weapon, possession for the purpose of trafficking fentanyl, and failing to comply with a probation order.
Police say the accused was held for a show cause hearing.
A second individual, a 22 year old Cobourg man, was also arrested at the scene and charged with being intoxicated in a public place. He was later released with a future court date.
