Today is a day of remembrance in Northumberland, as family, colleagues, and the community gather in Cobourg to honour fallen OPP Sergeant Brandon Malcolm.
A private funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Cobourg Community Centre for the 33 year old officer who died April 27 in the line of duty in a motorcycle collision on Highway 401 near Burnham Street.
In advance of the service, Ontario Provincial Police say a funeral cortege will travel from Oshawa to Cobourg beginning at approximately 8:30 a.m., moving eastbound along Highway 401 and arriving near 9:30 a.m.
Members of the public are invited to safely observe from Highway 401 overpasses along the route.
Beginning at approximately 9 a.m., officers and emergency personnel will also march from Kerr Street north along D’Arcy Street to the Cobourg Community Centre, forming a line of honour as the cortege arrives. Residents may gather along the west side of D’Arcy Street to observe the procession.
While the funeral itself is not open to the public, a livestream of the service is available through the OPP YouTube channel, and the Town of Cobourg has organized a public viewing at Victoria Hall.
Significant road closures are in place today beginning at 6 a.m. and will remain for the duration of the service. Closures include sections of D’Arcy Street, Kerr Street, West Street, and connecting roads, with traffic control measures in place and no public vehicle access near the Cobourg Community Centre.
The community centre remains closed to the public through today, with programs cancelled or rescheduled.
Residents wishing to pay their respects can sign books of condolence at Northumberland OPP detachments in Cobourg and Brighton, or visit a tribute set up outside the Cobourg detachment.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision as the community gathers to honour Sergeant Malcolm’s life, service, and sacrifice.
