Across the county, nominations opened at 8:30 a.m. on May 1, with candidate names in Cobourg now being posted daily on the CobourgVotes.ca website.
Municipal clerks across Northumberland and the province play a central role in guiding candidates through the process and ensuring elections are run fairly and transparently.
Cobourg municipal clerk Brent Larmer says while the opening of nominations marks the public start of the race, much of the preparation happens well in advance.
Larmer says the clerkâs office works behind the scenes to prepare nomination procedures, timelines, and supports for prospective candidates.
The Town of Cobourg is encouraging residents to consider running for local office, including positions for mayor, deputy mayor, five at large council seats, and school board trustees.
Similar processes are underway in municipalities across Northumberland, where clerks are supporting candidates and preparing for the 2026 election.
To assist candidates, Cobourg has launched an updated election website designed to centralize information and simplify the nomination process.
Larmer says the site includes candidate packages, booking details for filing nominations, and answers to frequently asked questions.
Officials say municipal clerks remain a cornerstone of the election process across the province, responsible for maintaining integrity, neutrality, and accessibility for all candidates and voters.
Nominations remain open until August, with election day set for October 2026.
