The Town of Cobourg is advising residents of temporary closures and restrictions as the community prepares to honour fallen Northumberland OPP Sergeant Brandon Malcolm.
A private funeral service for Sergeant Malcolm will be held Wednesday, May 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the Cobourg Community Centre. The Ontario Provincial Police have confirmed the service will not be open to the public, with details on a livestream expected to be released.
In preparation for visitation, the Cobourg Community Centre closed to the public Monday with the OPP Golden Helmets precision motorcycle team escorting Malcolm to the facility earlier today.
The building will remain closed through Wednesday, May 6 at 5 p.m.
All programs and activities scheduled during that time have been cancelled or rescheduled where possible, with registered users notified.
On the day of the funeral, access to the community centre campus and nearby buildings will be restricted, and residents are advised to plan accordingly.
The Town says there will be rolling road closures and traffic delays from approximately 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on D’Arcy Street, Division Street, and surrounding roads.
Additional impacts include the closure of the CCC walking track beginning Sunday, May 3, and the shutdown of the Venture13 parking lot on D’Arcy Street on May 6 until approximately 5 p.m.
Residents looking to access the Northumberland Fare Share Food Bank on Wednesday are encouraged to check fareshare.ca for updated information.
Books of condolence remain available at OPP detachment offices in Cobourg and Brighton, and expressions of sympathy can also be shared online.
The Town is thanking residents for their understanding as the community comes together to honour Sergeant Malcolm’s life and service.
