Cobourg council has approved a new purpose for the Albert Street washroom building, transforming the downtown space into a seasonal tourism and customer service hub.
With the return of warm weather, the building which is located beside the outdoor skating rink is no longer needed for rink operations and will now be staffed from May through October to support visitors and residents in the downtown core.
A report from Director of Community Services Lacricia Turner and Municipal Clerk Brent Larmer recommended the change, saying it would maintain security benefits while adding stronger customer service and tourism support.
Town staff say the building will be staffed by a tourism employee and a student ambassador who will provide visitor assistance, wayfinding help, and information about local attractions, events, and businesses.
The hub will also work alongside existing tourism locations including the marina kiosk and the beach information booth.
Officials say May operations are expected to run Monday through Saturday to support increased downtown activity and the Farmers’ Market. From June through August, the hub is expected to operate seven days a week. September and October hours will be reviewed based on demand and staffing resources.
Public washrooms will remain open as part of the service.
During the winter months, the building will return to being used as a warming area for residents using the outdoor skating rink, a feature staff say has been popular with the community.
Council members welcomed the plan, noting it improves public service while keeping a visible municipal presence in the downtown area.
