Lakelands Public Health is partnering with the Peterborough Humane Society to offer a reduced-cost rabies vaccine clinic this spring, helping make pet care more affordable for local families.
The first clinic will take place Friday, May 8th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the North Kawartha Community Centre in Apsley. Rabies vaccinations will cost $40 per pet.
Officials say the goal is to remove financial barriers that can prevent people from keeping pets up to date on important vaccinations.
Dr. Thomas Piggott, Medical Officer of Health for Lakelands Public Health, says vaccine costs are often cited as a challenge for pet owners. He says the clinic helps protect pets, the families who care for them, and supports public health by reducing the risk of diseases that can spread to humans.
Peterborough Humane Society CEO Shawn Morey says clinics like this are a priority, noting the partnership helps improve access to pet care while keeping the community safe.
Pet owners are reminded that dogs must be leashed and cats must be in carriers or otherwise properly restrained when attending the clinic.
Another low-cost clinic will also be offered Saturday, May 30th from 9 a.m. to noon through the Lakefield Animal Welfare Society in Selwyn. That clinic will offer rabies vaccines and microchips for $40 each or $60 for both.
Under Ontario law, all cats and dogs must be vaccinated against rabies at three months old and remain up to date throughout their lives.
