Cobourg council returns this week with several high-profile community issues expected to draw attention, including youth civic engagement, public safety concerns, and spring infrastructure planning.
One of the more positive updates will be the continued recognition of the Battle of the Badges charity hockey game, which raised more than $16,600 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Durham and Northumberland. The annual event brought about 1,100 people to the Cobourg Community Centre earlier this month and continues to grow as both a fundraiser and a community event.
Council is also promoting youth participation in the 2026 municipal election through two creative contests: the “I Voted” sticker contest and the “My Ideal Town” essay contest. Town officials say the goal is to help younger residents engage with the democratic process ahead of the October municipal election.
April’s Dig Safe Month campaign is also on council’s radar, with reminders for residents and contractors to contact Ontario One Call before starting any excavation work. Officials say spring landscaping and fencing projects can quickly become costly if underground utilities are damaged.
Council’s regular meeting will include final decisions on committee recommendations and is open to the public.
