Cobourg Mayor Lucas Cleveland says recent swatting incidents targeting local schools have his full attention, as police continue investigating a series of false threat calls linked to online exploitation and extortion of youth.
In a public statement, Cleveland said he has been in regular contact with Chief Paul VandeGraaf following multiple incidents involving St. Mary Catholic Secondary School and C.R. Gummow Public School over the past 10 days.
Cobourg police say officers have responded to numerous swatting incidents involving schools, residences, and businesses across town. Investigators believe the incidents originated through interactions on social media, gaming platforms, and online chat services.
Police say swatting involves deliberately making false emergency reports to trigger a large police response. Chief VandeGraaf says these incidents divert critical resources and create dangerous situations for residents and first responders.
Cleveland thanked frontline officers for their response, saying police have handled situations designed to create chaos with professionalism and urgency. He also acknowledged Police Services Board Chair Adam Bureau for his public support of emergency responders.
The mayor is now urging parents and guardians to speak with their children about responsible online behaviour and the real-world consequences of online activity.
He also stressed the importance of following police direction during emergencies, saying cooperation helps protect students, staff, and the broader community.
Cobourg Police Service says the Criminal Investigation Bureau continues to work with OPP and RCMP to identify those responsible. Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
