New gear for SONG thanks to SiriusXM Soundwaves MusiCounts Community Fund
From after-school music clubs and rock bands to live performances on professional stages, Sounds of the Next Generation (SONG) is offering a wide range of opportunities for young people to explore music across Northumberland County.
The community-based organization runs programs in local schools including Port Hope High School and Cobourg Collegiate Institute, while also creating performance opportunities that bring youth onto stages like the Capitol Theatre. The focus is on accessible, youth-driven programming that helps participants build skills, confidence and connections through music.
Now, that work is getting a boost through a $19,000 grant from the SiriusXM Soundwaves MusiCounts Community Fund. The funding is being used to purchase new instruments including keyboards, guitars and electronic drums, helping SONG expand its reach and stay mobile within the community.
Executive Director Miles Bowman says the funding is making a direct impact.
The investment is also helping strengthen school-based programming.
That model helps ensure students can access music opportunities directly within their school environment.
The program is also creating opportunities for youth to perform live in the community.
Bowman says the funding will help the organization continue growing its programs and reach more young people across Northumberland.
