Flags across the Town of Cobourg have been lowered to half staff in honour of former Fire Chief Harry Greer, who passed away March 29 at the age of 97.
Greer is being remembered for his decades of service and leadership within the Cobourg Fire Department, where he dedicated 37 years of his career. He served as Fire Chief from 1971 to 1990, a period marked by growth and modernization for the department.
His firefighting career began as a volunteer between 1952 and 1956 before joining a federal fire service unit in Cobourg. He later joined the municipal department in 1962 as a lieutenant, becoming Deputy Fire Chief in 1964 and ultimately Fire Chief in 1971.
Mayor Lucas Cleveland says Greer earned the respect of both colleagues and the community, noting his leadership helped shape the department into what it is today.
Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Ashfield says Greer remained closely connected to the department in retirement, mentoring firefighters and maintaining a strong presence in the community.
