Cobourg has officially launched Organ Donor Month with a flag raising ceremony at Victoria Hall, part of a broader effort to raise awareness about organ and tissue donation and encourage residents to register their consent.
Across Ontario and Canada, thousands of people are currently waiting for a life-saving transplant. According to donor awareness campaigns, one registered donor can save up to eight lives and help many more through tissue donation, making registration one of the most impactful decisions individuals can make.
Mayor Lucas Cleveland says the month is about encouraging conversations.
Sarah Marshall shared her story during the ceremony, saying that thanks to her organ donor she’s been able to live a fairly normal life.
Marshall’s experience highlights the long-term impact of donation on individuals and families.
She also encouraged residents to take part in awareness efforts tied to the month.
Cleveland says even small steps can help make a difference.
Officials say registering as a donor takes just minutes and can be done online, with residents also encouraged to speak with loved ones about their wishes.
