A house fire early Sunday morning has left a family homeless in the Municipality of Port Hope, and authorities say the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services were called to a rural address on County Road 28 just north of Oughs Road shortly after 3 a.m. on January 25, 2026. Upon arrival, crews found the home fully engulfed in flames. Water had to be shuttled to the scene, and the road was temporarily shut down to allow emergency vehicles to operate safely. Support units from neighbouring fire departments were brought in to assist.
The structure was a total loss, and the family was not at home when the fire broke out. There were no reported injuries, but the home and its contents were destroyed.
Officials have notified the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office and say the investigation into what sparked the fire is ongoing. At this time, no cause has been determined and investigators continue to work to establish how the fire started. Authorities are asking anyone who may have information related to the incident to contact local fire or police services.
