Port Hope Council took significant steps on January 21 as it continues work on the 2026 municipal budget and a range of service and infrastructure initiatives.
Under Ontario’s Strong Mayor legislation, the Mayor formally presented the proposed 2026 budget, which proposes a 2.7 per cent increase and was collaboratively prepared by staff and reviewed by Council. The budget process reflects efforts to balance the delivery of core services – from road and park maintenance to emergency response and recreation programs – with responsible tax planning. Residents are encouraged to review the draft and provide feedback at engage.porthope.ca/2026-budget as Council works to finalize spending priorities and ensure the budget aligns with community needs.
Council also engaged with delegations focused on future energy and regional environmental planning. The Ontario Clean Air Alliance highlighted the importance of investing in wind, solar and energy storage to meet Ontario’s evolving electricity needs, while representatives from the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission updated Council on the integrated assessment process for Ontario Power Generation’s proposed New Nuclear project near Wesleyville. Additionally, Port Hope endorsed Shelly Cuddy as its municipal representative to the Trent Conservation Coalition Source Protection Committee.
On municipal operations, Council approved an eight-year ultrafiltration membrane replacement agreement for the water treatment plant, aimed at cost savings in utility rates. The 2026 Interim Tax Levy By-law was passed to maintain funding for ongoing services until final tax bills are issued. Council also honored the Lauria family by naming the Town Park Recreation Centre courtyard the Frank M. Lauria Memorial Courtyard in recognition of their support for the park expansion.
Finally, Council approved a new Equity, Diversity & Inclusivity Strategy with an Anti-Oppression framework to guide operations and policy development. Staff will return within three months with a formal EDI policy detailing roles, accountability mechanisms and reporting requirements.
