Port Hope officials have declared a Significant Weather Event as persistent heavy snowfall and blowing winds continue to affect travel and municipal operations across the community.
The designation signals that weather conditions may prevent normal roadway and sidewalk maintenance, and that municipal standards may not be met until conditions improve. Environment Canada and local authorities are advising residents to avoid any non-essential travel while the storm continues.
Municipal crews have been actively monitoring conditions and responding throughout the day, completing snow clearing and applying salt and sand/salt mixes where possible. While the declaration does not change the timing or manner of winter operations, officials say it may take longer than usual to return roads and walkways to a safe state due to ongoing snowfall and wind conditions.
In response to the weather event, a number of municipal facilities closed at 12:00 p.m. Thursday, January 15:
- Town Hall
- Development Team Office (5 Mill Street South)
- Port Hope Public Library
- Jack Burger Sports Complex
- Town Park Recreation Centre
- Fire Administration Office
- Transit Services
The closures reflect concerns that parking lots, sidewalks, and emergency exits may not be maintained to regular standards during the storm. Facilities are expected to reopen Friday, January 16, with normal operating hours, weather permitting.
Municipal administrative staff working in these facilities continue to support the public remotely and are available by email. Residents with urgent roads, water or wastewater inquiries may call the municipal after-hours line at 905-885-2431, then press *.
Public safety remains the top priority as crews work in difficult conditions. Motorists, pedestrians and other road users are urged to use extra caution, adjust driving behaviour to suit road conditions, and provide snowplows and crews with plenty of space to operate safely until the weather event has ended.
