Commuters from Northumberland County and surrounding communities will see continued savings thanks to Ontario’s extension of the One Fare program.
The province is extending the initiative for an additional two years, helping transit users save up to $1,600 annually.
Launched in 2024, One Fare allows riders to pay only once when transferring between GO Transit and regional transit networks, including the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), MiWay, Brampton Transit, Durham Region Transit, Peel TransHelp, and York Region Transit. Since its inception, the program has saved Ontarians nearly $200 million and enabled nearly 62 million free transfers.
“By eliminating double fares, we’re protecting residents’ pocketbooks and helping them access work, school, and essential services.” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation.
Rural commuters can use a PRESTO card, debit, or credit card to tap on and off for a single fare across their entire trip. Transfers are valid for two hours on local transit and three hours when starting on GO Transit, making it easier for longer commutes into the Greater Toronto Area.
The program also complements Ontario’s broader transit expansion, including the Ontario Line, Scarborough Subway Extension, Finch West LRT, and Yonge North Subway Extension. Officials say One Fare strengthens regional connectivity while supporting sustainable, cost-effective travel for rural residents who rely on transit for trips into Toronto.
With the program now extended, commuters can continue enjoying significant savings while accessing Toronto’s jobs, services, and opportunities without paying double fares.
