Two Scarborough women have been arrested following a joint investigation into organized retail crime involving multiple jurisdictions.
On November 27, the Cobourg Police Service Criminal Investigations Bureau, in collaboration with Port Hope Police Service, executed a search warrant on a vehicle linked to thefts across several areas. Officers recovered clothing, household items, jewelry, and over 1,000 chocolate bars believed to be stolen.
A 27-year-old woman and a 19-year-old woman were charged with theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime. Both were released from custody with a future court date, and police say further charges are expected as the investigation continues.
Police stress that retail theft is not a victimless crime. The theft of merchandise affects the community through higher prices and reduced safety in retail environments. Organized retail crime places significant risks on both retail workers and customers.
The Cobourg Police Service remains committed to investigating these incidents and working closely with local retailers to prevent organized theft. Officers encourage anyone with information about retail crime to come forward, noting that community support is essential to protecting local businesses and ensuring public safety.
