A large mixed-use redevelopment known as Ganaraska Place was presented to the Municipality of Port Hope during a special council meeting on November 12, where the proposal was received for information.
The concept outlines a major transformation of the former Ontario Ministry of Transportation property on Hope Street, combining commercial, residential and community amenities across several phases.
At the centre of the commercial component is a five-storey, 100-room hotel paired with a 7,000-square-foot conference and banquet facility. The plan also includes more than 9,000 square feet of office space, as well as ground-floor commercial units intended for local shops and services.
The residential portion features more than 250 units across multiple apartment buildings ranging from four to seven storeys, along with eight townhouses and four single-family residential lots. According to the proposal, the mix is intended to support a range of demographics, including seniors, families and individuals seeking rental options.
Community amenities are also highlighted. The plan includes a new public park, a parkette and playground facilities, along with improved access to adjacent conservation areas. More than 500 parking spaces would be provided to support residents, visitors and commercial activity.
Municipal staff emphasized that the proposal is in the early stages and will require extensive review, including servicing capacity, infrastructure needs, traffic impact and compatibility with surrounding neighbourhoods. The public will have opportunities to provide input as the application proceeds through the planning process.
If approved, Ganaraska Place would mark one of the most significant redevelopment projects in Port Hope in many years.
