Build Canada says the federal government’s latest budget makes progress toward economic growth but falls short of the bold action needed to unleash the country’s full potential.
In a statement, the policy group said the budget shows Ottawa is “starting to listen to the builders — the people who create innovation, jobs, and prosperity.”
CEO Lucy Hargreaves spoke with NorthumberlandDaily.ca.
While considered a ‘step in the right direction’, Hargreaves warned many of the commitments lack detail or urgency.
The group pointed to delayed timelines for red tape reduction and immigration reforms, as well as limited ambition on spending restraint. Also, Build Canada’s own analysis suggested immediate operational cuts of up to 20 per cent were possible, compared to Ottawa’s plan for a 10 per cent reduction over five years.
“Execution now matters more than promises,” the group said, adding that the true test of the budget will be whether the government can deliver on its stated goals.
