Northumberland County is serving up something delicious this November as United Way Northumberland launches its first annual Ultimate Burger Battle, a month-long fundraiser bringing together local restaurants from four municipalities in a friendly competition to support community programs.
Each participating restaurant has created a signature burger for the challenge, with $2 from every burger sold donated directly to United Way initiatives that help local families access healthy food. At the end of the month, one burger will earn the title of Northumberland’s Ultimate Burger of the Year, as voted by the public.
“This is such a fun and tasty way to support our community,” said United Way Executive Director Alicia Vandine. “It keeps dollars local, celebrates our amazing restaurants, and helps ensure everyone in Northumberland has enough on their plate.”
Vandine says this tasty initiative really ties in well with their mandate.
The Ultimate Burger Battle features restaurants from across the county, including Arthur’s Pub, Captain George’s Fish & Chips, the Cobourg Diner, Hardy’s, Olympus Burger, Smokehouse Tap & Grill, Sunny Side Diner, The Mill Restaurant, The Whistling Duck, The Thirsty Goose and just added…The Royal Crown Pub and Grill in Colborne.
Smokehouse Tap & Grill in Brighton’s Jeff Allison tells us he’s confident Bob’s burger will be a contender.
Vandine says Allison is a wonderful example of all of the business owners participating, and notes United Way Northumberland couldn’t do the work they do without such strong community partners.
Residents can vote online for their favourite burger throughout November. Two awards will be handed out – People’s Choice for the most votes, and Most Ultimate Burgers Sold for the restaurant raising the most funds.
The campaign builds on a successful model first launched by United Way Thunder Bay, and organizers hope it becomes an annual tradition in Northumberland.
