Cobourg Police say no charges have been laid following a disturbance downtown Wednesday night that prompted public concern for the mayor’s safety.
Officers were called to King Street West around 11 p.m. after reports of a man being verbally aggressive and damaging a Halloween display on private property. Police say that after speaking with the individuals involved and considering public interest, no charges were laid, and the man was released unconditionally.
On Friday, Cobourg Mayor Lucas Cleveland released a public statement acknowledging the incident and thanking residents for their outpouring of concern and support. He also expressed gratitude to the Cobourg Police Service and Councillor Adam Bureau for their assistance.
“I just wanted to thank all of those who have reached out to me regarding an issue that occurred recently, regarding my personal safety. I have been overwhelmed by the kindness and concern and I wanted to say how grateful I am. I can’t discuss publicly the details regarding matters of my personal safety and security, but I would like to thank the Cobourg Police Service and Councillor Adam Bureau for their assistance. This incident, not just because it involved me personally, reminds us all that we live here in Cobourg in very different times. Again, my sincerest thanks to those who have shared their concerns for me with me,” said Mayor Lucas Cleveland.
