Northumberland County and the Prosper in Northumberland collaboration are marking Small Business Week, October 19 to 25, by celebrating the power of local entrepreneurs and encouraging residents to show their support for small businesses across the county.
Earlier this year, Prosper in Northumberland conducted a Buy Local survey of more than 350 business owners and residents. The findings highlight both strong community support and shared challenges. Seventy-one percent of local businesses employ 10 or fewer people, and 66 percent have operated in the county for over a decade. Meanwhile, 68 percent of businesses anticipate higher costs in 2025, and 66 percent of residents say they already prioritize shopping locally.
The survey also found that word-of-mouth remains the top influence for consumer decisions-91 percent of respondents said community connections guide where they shop. Prosper in Northumberland says these insights will help shape future business support and inform the work of local Chambers of Commerce.
Residents are being encouraged to “show their local love” by signing the Buy Local Pledge at BuyNorthumberland.ca, committing to redirect between $10 and $100 of their monthly spending toward Northumberland businesses.
“Small businesses are the backbone of our community,” said Rob Day, County Manager of Economic Development. “They keep our economy running, create local jobs, and support programs that strengthen our towns. Small Business Week is our chance to give back by supporting them in return.”
