Ontario is launching its fall immunization program to protect residents from flu, COVID-19 and RSV as respiratory virus season approaches.
Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Sylvia Jones says the province is “using every tool” to keep communities safe by making vaccines available where and when they’re needed.
Starting the week of September 22, COVID-19 vaccines will be available to high-risk and priority groups, followed by flu shots the week of September 29. The early rollout will prioritize hospitalized patients, hospital staff, residents and staff in long-term care homes, retirement homes and other congregate settings, as well as individuals aged 65 and older.
Ontario has also expanded access to RSV vaccines. Adults aged 75 and older and those 60 to 74 who meet high-risk criteria will be eligible for Abrysvo® or Arexvy starting September 22. Beginning October 1, eligible newborns, infants and high-risk children will have access to the Beyfortus® immunization, while pregnant women can receive RSV vaccines to help protect infants at birth.
Starting October 27, flu and COVID-19 vaccines will be available free of charge to the general public at participating pharmacies, public health units, and doctor and nurse practitioner offices.
Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore says staying up to date on seasonal vaccines is a key way for Ontarians to protect themselves, their families and loved ones. Health-care providers and pharmacists across the province are working with Ontario to ensure vaccines are available locally.
More information, including eligibility details, is available at ontario.ca/covidvaccines or through local public health units.
