The Town of Cobourg says dredging operations at the harbour are continuing this week, with work shifting to the west side known as Dredge Area 2.
Mechanical dredging removes accumulated sand and silt that contribute to shallow water levels and can hinder boat anchoring and navigation.
Officials say maintaining proper depths is essential to keeping the harbour accessible and functional for boaters and other recreational users. This year’s work began in the spring at the harbour entrance to allow for the safe return of the Coast Guard.
A designated disposal area has been set up on the basin beach where piles of dredged sand will be placed with holes in the beach to let lake water drain out before the material is trucked off site.
Since 2009, Cobourg has owned and operated the Marie Dressler Dredge as a public service to the community. In addition to servicing the town’s harbour each year, the dredge is rented out to neighbouring municipalities to help maintain their harbours and waterways.
Residents along Third Street, Hibernia and Marissa Lane may notice the dredge supply trailer parked in the marina parking lot during operations. When not in use, the trailer will be moved to the boat storage compound.
