The Town of Cobourg is inviting local students in Grades 7 to 10 to apply for its “Mayor for the Day” contest, which runs from September 8 to October 17, 2025.
The initiative, returning as part of Local Government Week, aims to educate young people about municipal government and give them a voice in improving their community. To apply, students must live in Cobourg and submit an idea for making the town a better place, either in writing or by video. All entries will go directly to Mayor Lucas Cleveland, who will select the winner.
The student chosen as “Mayor for the Day” will take part in a range of activities on October 29, 2025. They will tour municipal facilities, spend time with Mayor Cleveland, attend official meetings, and formally open a Regular or Special Council session. The winner will also be recognized with a temporary ceremonial street name placed on Second Street for one week. In addition, the winner can arrange a class visit for the Mayor, who will bring lunch and answer questions about municipal government.
Application forms are available online at Cobourg.ca/MayorForTheDay or can be picked up at the Customer Service desk at Victoria Hall. Video entries and questions can be emailed to htodd@cobourg.ca.
This contest provides a hands-on opportunity for Cobourg youth to learn how their municipal government works while sharing ideas to enhance their community.
