Port Hope residents are being invited to put their creativity to the test by naming two of the municipality’s snowplows ahead of the 2025-26 winter season. The “Name That Snowplow” contest opened September 2 and runs until September 24, with submissions accepted online at engage.porthope.ca/name-that-plow.
Ideas can draw on puns, local landmarks or famous figures and should be short, catchy, family-friendly and, ideally, include words like snow, plow or blizzard. “Our snowplow operators work around the clock each winter to keep our community safe and moving, and this contest is a fun way to shine a spotlight on their efforts,” said Mayor Olena Hankivsky.
After entries close, the Roads team will shortlist finalists for a community vote from October 8 to 29. The winning names will be announced November 15, with champions earning bragging rights and a photo opportunity alongside their newly named plow.
While the contest is lighthearted, Port Hope takes snow-clearing seriously. The municipality has a fleet of more than 11 vehicles – including tandem axle salter/snowplow units, a large grader, a sidewalk machine and pickup trucks equipped with plows and salters – operated by 15 skilled staff who clear and maintain over 681 lane-kilometres of roads each winter.
Residents can find more details and submit their ideas at engage.porthope.ca.
