Northumberland County is calling on residents to take action against food insecurity this September with the launch of its Hunger Action Month campaign, “30 Ways in 30 Days.”
The initiative encourages community members to take one small action each day, such as supporting food banks, reducing food waste, or sharing information online to strengthen food security across the county.
The need for support continues to grow. Between April 2024 and March 2025, more than one million people turned to food banks across Ontario, accounting for over seven million visits. Locally, food banks assisted 5,889 residents in 2024, with nearly 30 percent of clients under 18. Overall, there were 65,164 visits, marking an 11 percent increase compared to 2023.
Northumberland’s Food 4 All Warehouse and twelve local food banks are leading the response, working together to distribute food and support awareness efforts. Nationally, Food Banks Canada coordinates campaigns, while Feed Ontario leads at the provincial level.
On August 13, County Council officially proclaimed September as Hunger Action Month, underscoring the importance of collective community action.
Residents can get involved by downloading the “30 Ways in 30 Days” calendar at Northumberland.ca/HungerActionMonth, reading the 2025 Feed the Change Report, or finding local food support options through the Food Help Northumberland website.
Sharing Hunger Action Month content from the Food 4 All Facebook page is another simple way to raise awareness.
