The Northumberland Hills Hospital Auxiliary has recognized two Cobourg students for their volunteer service by awarding them the 2025 Dixie Mikel Scholarships.
Congratulations go to Isabella Leon and Vikaash Angusami Subasri, each receiving a $1,250 scholarship to support their studies in health sciences. The scholarship honours the late Yvonne (Dixie) Mikel, wife of local physician Dr. Don Mikel, who is credited with founding the hospital’s Student Auxiliary Volunteer program. Each year, the award is presented to exceptional student volunteers who have logged at least 80 hours at NHH and are pursuing studies in fields such as nursing, medical research, or biotechnology.
Since joining the Auxiliary in 2023, Isabella has volunteered in the Cancer and Supportive Care unit, inspired by her own health-care experiences and those of a close family member. She is entering the final year of her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and hopes to continue with graduate studies.
Vikaash began volunteering in December 2023 with the hospital’s Post-Acute Specialty Services and Hospital Elder Life Program. He credits the experience with helping him build confidence and connections. This fall, he will begin an Honours Bachelor of Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa, with the goal of becoming a Registered Nurse and later a Nurse Practitioner.
Auxiliary President Rick Riley said the scholarships highlight the dedication of student volunteers while honouring Dixie Mikel’s legacy. Applications for the 2026 scholarships will be accepted until July 30, 2026.
