Northumberland OPP says an investigation is continuing after a serious crash on Hwy. 401 near Grafton Wednesday night, which sent one person to hospital life-threatening injuries.
Emergency crews – police, fire and paramedics – responded to the three-vehicle collision on Hwy. 401 westbound, east of the Lyle Street overpass, just after 10 p.m., said Northumberland OPP.
One passenger was airlifted to a Toronto-area hospital with life-threatening injuries, said OPP, in an update on the morning of Thursday, Aug. 14, 2025.
The crash shut down the westbound highway from County Road 25 in Colborne until just after 6 a.m. Thursday, with OPP’s technical collision investigation team also called into the scene.
While the highway was closed, police said a 24-year-old driver from Brampton allegedly entered the closed section and was subsequently stopped by police. As a result, police said the man was charged with careless driving.
This charge has not been proven in court.
Northumberland OPP is once again calling on motorists to obey road closure signs and follow detours. These measures are in place to protect emergency personnel, individuals involved in collisions, and to preserve the integrity of investigations, explained police.
The investigation into the collision is ongoing, and police are asking anyone with information or video footage to reach out to Northumberland OPP 1-888-310-1122.
Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online.
