The Cobourg Police Service has launched its August Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) with a focus on intersection safety. Throughout the month, officers will increase enforcement and public education around stop signs, red lights, and right-of-way violations which police say are key causes of serious collisions in the area.
Failing to stop at stop signs or red lights, rolling stops, and failing to yield to pedestrians or other vehicles will be key targets. Fines for these offences range from $110 for stop sign violations to $365 for failing to yield to pedestrians, with accompanying demerit points. Careless driving near intersections can result in fines of $490 and six demerit points.
The Cobourg Police remind all road users to stay alert and obey traffic signals to reduce preventable collisions. This initiative is part of the Vision Zero strategy, which aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries while promoting safe and equitable mobility for all residents.
By focusing on high-risk behaviours at intersections, police hope to increase awareness and encourage safer driving habits throughout Cobourg this August.
