The Town of Cobourg says a diesel fuel spill in the harbour has been contained and cleanup efforts are continuing with support from environmental contractors.
Waterfront Operations staff discovered the spill on the evening of Wednesday, August 6. The source was a vessel that had been towed into the marina earlier in the day. A mechanical failure caused fuel to leak from the boat’s bilge.
The town says staff responded quickly by placing containment booms around the vessel and securing it in place. However, by Thursday it became clear that additional support was needed. Under the guidance of Public Works and Engineering, the Town called in GFL Environmental to assist.
It’s estimated that approximately 10 litres of diesel fuel entered the harbour. GFL crews successfully contained the spill within the inner harbour using a vacuum truck and absorbent pads.
Residents and visitors can expect to see cleanup equipment in the water over the weekend. Booms will remain in place until fuel levels are negligible. A reassessment is scheduled for Monday.
“I would like to thank our Waterfront Operations staff for their quick response to this situation,” said Mayor Lucas Cleveland. “Thanks to their extensive knowledge and monitoring, our staff were able to control and mitigate this unfortunate situation.”
The cost of cleanup will be charged back to the boat owner. The Town also thanked the boating community for their support and understanding.
More updates will be shared through the Town of Cobourg’s official channels.
