Cavan Street File Factory following fire, taken July 14, 2024
The Municipality of Port Hope is moving forward with fire debris cleanup at the former File Factory site on Cavan Street, beginning this week.
Crews began mobilizing at 121 Cavan Street today, with debris removal expected to begin tomorrow, August 1. The cleanup is scheduled to take approximately one week. During that time, residents may notice temporary lane disruptions and increased truck traffic in the immediate area. Drivers and pedestrians are encouraged to use extra caution when travelling nearby.
The effort follows a July 2024 fire that caused significant damage to the structure. Municipal officials say the cleanup is being carried out in accordance with local and provincial regulations after the property owner failed to comply with an order to remediate the site. To bring the property into compliance, the Municipality has hired a contractor, and all associated costs will be charged back to the owner.
The goal is to remove the fire-related debris and return the site to a condition that meets community standards for safety and appearance.
The Municipality is thanking residents for their continued patience and understanding as this important work is completed.
