The Canadian flag outside Northumberland Hills Hospital (NHH) is flying at half-mast today, July 24, in a solemn tribute to 19 Auxiliary volunteers who passed away over the last year.
The observance coincides with the NHH Auxiliary’s Annual Meeting and serves as a symbolic gesture of appreciation for the selfless service of both active and former members.
More than 325 volunteers contributed over 40,000 hours to the hospital last year, supporting patients and staff in roles that include greeting visitors, offering directions, comforting patients in the Emergency Department, and helping raise funds through the hospital gift shop and Petticoat Lane thrift store.
The hospital says the lowering of the flag is a meaningful tradition that recognises the extraordinary commitment and lasting impact of its volunteers. Four active Auxiliary members—Kim Heydie DeMattos, Heather Diane Smith, Suzanne Marie Gibb, and Elizabeth Mae “Libby” Orovan—are among those being honoured, along with 15 past members who served the hospital in years gone by.
NHH President and CEO Susan Walsh says the spirit of volunteerism at the hospital remains vibrant and diverse, and that today’s tribute acknowledges the kindness and generosity these individuals have left behind.
