Loyalist College is responding to regional demand for skilled trades training with the launch of two new electrician apprenticeship programs.
Beginning in 2026, the college will offer Electrician – Construction and Maintenance, and Industrial Electrician training, helping local apprentices complete their in-class requirements closer to home.
These programs are part of a broader effort to reduce barriers for apprentices who have historically had to travel outside the region for training. Loyalist says this added travel introduced financial pressure and delays to completing apprenticeships, making it harder for workers to get certified.
“Loyalist’s new apprenticeship programs are a direct response to what we’ve heard from employers and apprentices,” said Dr. Amanda Baskwill, Senior Vice President Academic and Chief Learning Officer. “We’re helping learners achieve certification without putting their lives on hold.”
The college is working with local employers to ensure the curriculum matches real-world needs, training students on equipment and practices used by industry. Companies like Spark Power have already voiced their support.
“Many of our apprentices are proud Loyalist grads,” said Spark Power’s Brian Pennell. “This announcement means they can now continue training closer to home. It’s a big win for our community and economy.”
The new electrician programs follow the launch of Loyalist’s Industrial Mechanic Millwright Apprenticeship, which begins this fall.
College President Mark Kirkpatrick says expanding local access to skilled trades education supports both individual opportunity and Ontario’s economic growth, particularly in sectors like construction and infrastructure.
